Kajiado South Sub-County Officials Benchmark with the Sand Authority on Sustainable Sand Management

Makueni County Sand Conservation and Utilization Authority hosted members of Sand Dam Management Committees from Kajiado South Sub-County through the Kajiado County Government, in partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature Kenya for a benchmarking exercise. The visit aimed to provide insights into various aspects of sustainable sand resource management, including best practices in sand dam management, responsible sand harvesting, and fostering a sense of stewardship toward sand as a vital natural resource. Additionally, the visit focused on promoting voluntary environmental conservation efforts and addressing challenges related to resource management.

The delegation was particularly interested in understanding the Sand Authority's approach to community participation in sand dam construction, which ensures inclusivity and sustainability in conservation initiatives. They also sought to learn how the Authority strikes a balance between the conservation and utilization of sand resources, ensuring that environmental protection efforts align with economic and infrastructural development needs. Through this exchange, the visiting team gathered practical lessons and strategies that could be replicated in their respective regions to enhance sustainable sand management practices.
