Shaping the future of sand resource management: Makueni County explores policy reforms for sustainability and growth

Makueni County Sand Conservation and Utilization Authority held a strategic meeting with the County Assembly Committee on Environment and Climate Change to deliberate on the repeal of the Makueni County Sand Conservation and Utilization Act 2015 (Amended 2022).
Chaired by Eng. Joseph Muema, the Committee Chairperson, the meeting focused on exploring ways to enhance value addition in the sand sector through a more comprehensive policy framework. Discussions centered on aligning legislation with emerging market dynamics and promoting sustainable sand harvesting practices.
Eng. Muema emphasized that revising the current framework is essential to align with the County’s development agenda, unlocking economic opportunities while protecting the environment.
The Authority’s Managing Director, Urbanus Ndunda, expressed gratitude for the collaborative approach and reiterated the Authority’s commitment to supporting legislative reforms that improve sand resource management.
As a next step, the Authority and the Committee resolved to organize stakeholder forums to gather input from the public, investors and environmental experts, ensuring a balanced and inclusive approach to the proposed amendments.
